Light Studies - Jacques Cousteau

This was another project given to me in my drawing class. We've been focusing on light studies and my teacher wanted us to draw a portrait of Jacques Cousteau using the technique of white on black paper.
For this assignment we were only allowed to use the white pencil crayon from Prismacolor and a piece of black Canson paper.
The first step was our teacher putting the picture up onto the projector screen upside down. She wanted us to really push and test ourselves for this assignment. She told us to forget about proportion and try our best.
After carefully studying the way the light hit his face and all the different angles, this was the end result from drawing upside down. I felt pretty happy with it at this point seeing as this was the first time I'd ever done anything like this. The final test was to flip the paper right side up to see the true final result.
After flipping the picture to face the proper way, I still felt quite proud of myself and the end result. Although I made some mistakes on the proportions, for example his nose, my teacher still complemented my work saying I had "captured the light on his face beautifully". I really enjoyed this project and would love to do more light studies like this in the future. Thanks for checking this out! Please be kind as I'm an artist starting out.
